From May 7 to June 1, 2024, the Daniel Maghen Gallery is proud to dedicate an exhibition to two great names of comic art and illustration, Jean-Claude Fournier and Pierre Joubert.

Two leading figures in their respective fields

Born in 1943, Jean-Claude Fournier is one of the last representatives of the golden age of Franco-Belgian comics. Influenced by Hergé and Peyo and trained by Franquin, Fournier follows in the footsteps of the great masters of comic art. He himself trained generations of artists such as Emmanuel Lepage and Michel Plessix. Fournier will remain known for having been Franquin's worthy successor for the legendary Spirou and Fantasio series, for which he produced nine albums. The artist infused his own touch, introducing new characters and greatly expanding the universe. His incredibly effective graphic style, sense of humor, and storytelling genius explode in every panel. At the age of 80, the artist once again proved his ability to reinvent himself and amaze with Ma vie de rêves (published by Daniel Maghen), an autobiographical album produced entirely in direct colors, in which he recounts his memories as an illustrator with Franquin, Morris, Tillieux and Will. The exhibition features the original pages from Ma vie de rêves, alongside rare pages from his albums Spirou and Fantasio, Bizu, Les Chevaux du vent and Plus près de toi. This is an exceptional opportunity to admire the artworks of an iconic figure of comic art, admired by his peers, and to celebrate his legacy.

Creator of more than 15,000 artworks over a 70-year career, Pierre Joubert (1910-2002) remains a prominent figure among the greatest realist comic artists. He is best known for his exceptional contribution to the world of Scouting, as well as for his participation in the development of the encyclopedia La Vie privée des Hommes and the Signe de Piste collection. His pure yet powerful lines, combined with his mastery of composition, color, and light, give his artwork an unparalleled evocative power. His influence has been profound, inspiring an entire generation of artists such as Mitacq, René Follet, Emmanuel Lepage, and Patrice Pellerin. With the help of the Joubert family, the Daniel Maghen Gallery is honored to present the artist's latest masterpieces. The exhibition unveils an exceptional selection of artworks and paintings from the Signe de Piste collection, La Vie privée des Hommes, and a few rare pieces from L'Initiation à l'Héraldique.
