The Creator of Lucky Luke

Artiste belge, Morris suit des cours de dessin animé par correspondance avant d'entrer en 1946 à dans le studio d’animation la Compagnie belge d'actualités A Belgian artist, Morris took correspondence courses in cartooning before joining the animation studio Compagnie belge d'actualités (CBA) in 1946. It was there that he met André Franquin. When CBA closed its doors, Morris turned to comic art. In December 1946, he published Arizona 1880, the very first Lucky Luke story, in L'Almanach Spirou. In 1948, he set sail with Franquin and Jijé on an ocean liner bound for the United States. There, he met the team of artists from the satirical magazine Mad. He also met René Goscinny, who became the writer for Lucky Luke starting in 1955. After Goscinny’s death in 1977, Morris entrusted the script of his iconic character’s adventures to various writers. Beginning in 1987, he drew the Rantanplan series. In 1992, he received the Special Grand Prize at the 20th Angoulême International Comics Festival.

Morris was one of the few postwar Europeans to travel to the United States with the aim of working in a studio to study the minimalist effectiveness and craftsmanship of comic artists. For five years, he immersed himself in the spirit and technique of the talented artists at MAD magazine: Harvey Kurtzman, Jack Davis, Mort Drucker, Wally Wood... Upon his return to Belgium, Morris—politely—kicked the backside of the slumbering European comic art scene and revolutionized old-school comics by introducing his own inimitable, punchy style! He prioritized sharp framing, rigorously simplified backgrounds, and maximum clarity of line. When it came to color, as a worthy precursor to Pop Art, Morris sacrificed traditional, stilted coloring on the altar of unadorned narrative impact.
