With Le Combat d'Henry Fleming (2024) and Cinq branches de coton noir (2018), Steve Cuzor has created his two greatest comic art masterpieces and proven to be a true master of black-and-white. The artist reaches new heights with breathtaking inking, an exceptional mastery of light, textures and atmospheres that confirms his status as a master. His artwork draws us into the heart of the battles, which he manages to depict with striking realism. Explosions, gunfire, whistling bullets, charges, close-quarters combat—the battle sequences evoke the smell of blood and gunpowder, and the soldiers’ cries of anguish. Away from the battles, Cuzor also creates remarkable sequences where we can admire his mastery of black and white through subtle plays of light and shadow and settings teeming with detail.

The exceptional success of the auction dedicated to Steve Cuzor organized by Daniel Maghen Enchères in 2024 for the release of Henry Fleming’s Combat confirms the artist’s market value. The auction far exceeded its estimate and set a new world record for this album, with original page no. 43 estimated at €4,000 and sold for €12,350 (including tax).

To ensure that your pages are kept in good condition, we recommend that you never expose them to direct light, as UV rays can damage the media used to produce them. Although Indian ink is a perennial material, the paper support may change when exposed to UV light. Note that watercolor plates require special attention, as this medium is particularly sensitive to light. Pieces containing pastel or charcoal require special care to avoid rubbing.
We advise you to display them away from windows, and to use frames made of pH-neutral conservation materials and “Museum” glass with anti-UV and anti-reflective treatment. If you prefer to keep your works unframed, we recommend storing them flat, in drawing cartons, with sheets of pH-neutral permanent paper in between. Keep them away from light and humidity

A French writer and illustrator born in Rennes in 1971, Steve Cuzor began his comic art career in 1999 with Blackjack (1999–2004, Casterman) after initially working as a rodeo cowboy in Texas. He then collaborated with Frank Giroud on Quintett (Vol. 3) (2006, Dupuis), which won the Uderzo Prize, followed by a collaboration with José-Louis Bocquet on an album about Lead Belly (2006, Nocturne), and went on to create O’Boys (2009–2012, Dargaud) with Philippe Thirault and Stephan Colman. He also created Volume 6 of XIII Mystery (2013, Dargaud) with Laurent-Frédéric Bollée. In 2017, he published Cinq branches de coton noir (Dupuis) based on a script by Yves Sente, which won multiple awards in 2018. Then in 2024, Steve Cuzor released Le Combat d’Henry Fleming (Dupuis), adapted from the work of Stephen Crane. This graphic novel was exhibited in Angoulême upon its release and awarded the RTL Grand Prix de la BD.
