Steve Cuzor Exhibition

It took the author of Cinq branches de coton noir five years to complete his album. With Le Combat d'Henry Fleming, Steve Cuzor has created a superb adaptation of a monument of American literature written by Stephen Crane, a black and white immersion in the American Civil War. Published by Dupuis in 2024, in the prestigious Aire Libre collection, the album was honored upon its release with an exhibition at the Angoulême Festival.

With this graphic novel, Steve Cuzor reaches new heights in his mastery of black and white, light, textures, and atmospheres, offering us breathtaking inking. His artworks draw us into the heart of the battles, which he manages to describe with striking realism. Explosions, detonations, whistling bullets, charges, close combat—the battle sequences evoke the smell of blood, gunpowder and the lamentations of soldiers. The album also features remarkable sequences away from the battles, including a masterful night scene in the forest drawn with a subtle play of light and shadow. This exhibition will thus be an opportunity to admire the extent of Steve Cuzor's talent through the most spectacular original pages from Le Combat d'Henry Fleming, as well as a selection of originals from his previous masterpiece: Cinq branches de coton noir.
