André Juillard

A master of realistic comic art and an unparalleled colorist, André Juillard’s art stands out for its elegance and clarity. Shaped by the “ligne claire” style, he became the leading figure in historical comic art in the 1980s and 1990s, before being recognized as a complete artist with his two-part series Le Cahier Bleu and winning the Angoulême Grand Prix in 1996. André Juillard is one of the most sought-after artists in the market for original comic art. This is evidenced by the exceptional success of the three auctions organized by Daniel Maghen Enchères & Expertises in 2019, 2021 (“white gloves”), and 2025, which achieved outstanding results for all his flagship series—such as Plume aux vents, Les 7 vies de l'Épervier, and Le Cahier Bleu—as well as for his illustrations. This artist's world record goes to the original page no. 1 from Le Cahier Bleu, estimated at €42,000 and sold for €81,250 (including tax) at Christie’s in 2019.

To ensure that your pages are kept in good condition, we recommend that you never expose them to direct light, as UV rays can damage the media used to produce them. Although Indian ink is a perennial material, the paper support may change when exposed to UV light. Note that watercolor plates require special attention, as this medium is particularly sensitive to light. Pieces containing pastel or charcoal require special care to avoid rubbing.
We advise you to display them away from windows, and to use frames made of pH-neutral conservation materials and “Museum” glass with anti-UV and anti-reflective treatment. If you prefer to keep your works unframed, we recommend storing them flat, in drawing cartons, with sheets of pH-neutral permanent paper in between. Keep them away from light and humidity.

A French author and illustrator and winner of the Grand Prix at the Angoulême International Comics Festival in 1996, André Juillard (1948–2024) was a leading figure in the world of comic art. He achieved success in the 1980s and 1990s with the historical series Les 7 Vies de l’Épervier (1983–1991, Glénat), Masquerouge (1984, Glénat), and Plume aux vents (1995–2002, Dargaud), written by Patrick Cothias, as well as Arno (1984–1987, Glénat), created with Jacques Martin. The artist established himself as a complete creator and broke away from the historical genre with Le Cahier bleu (1994–1998, Casterman). Winner of the Best Album Award at Angoulême in 1995, André Juillard was awarded the Grand Prix at the Angoulême Festival the following year. As the ultimate recognition, in 2000, he took over the Blake and Mortimer series with Yves Sente, and illustrated 8 albums. The title Signé Olrik, published in 2024, would be the last of his career. He also collaborated with Pierre Christin on Léna (2006–2020, Dargaud) and with Yann on Mezek (2011, Lombard) and Double 7 (2018, Dargaud). Éditions Daniel Maghen dedicated two art books to him: Entracte (2006) and Carnets secrets (2020).
