From March 14 to April 1, 2023, the Daniel Maghen Gallery is proud to dedicate a retrospective to a master of the 9th Art, André Juillard.
A style of rare elegance
Winner of the Angoulême Grand Prix in 1996, André Juillard is considered one of the greatest realist artists, with a graphic style of rare elegance. This exhibition brings together an exceptional number of artworks—from pencil sketches to original color pages—with nearly two hundred artworks from his iconic series Le Cahier Bleu, Les 7 Vies de l’Épervier, Plume aux vents, Blake et Mortimer, as well as Arno, Double 7, Léna, Masquerouge and Mezek.
The retrospective also showcases a completely different facet of his work, consisting of freehand drawings on paper. This was a daily exercise for this artist, who seemed to draw as naturally as he breathed. The exhibition includes numerous female nudes, ink or pencil portraits of his famous heroines Ariane, Louise, Eve, and Léna, as well as action and combat scenes. These vibrant sketches, sometimes enhanced with color, are illustrated in a multitude of techniques and graphic styles. All of André Juillard's artistry bursts forth in the beauty of a glance, the softness of a curve, a naked body, the elegance of a pose.
