With his perfect mastery of direct coloring against pencil-drawn backgrounds – sometimes enhanced with gouache, acrylic paint or even oil pastels – Serge Pellé’s pages are highly legible and impressively detailed.
Considered one of the best science fiction series since Valérian (Valerian and Laureline), Orbital enjoys a solid reputation in the comic art market. Among its most notable sales is the cover for Justice, the seventh volume of the series, which sold for €10,720 in 2022.
After starting out in the Paris advertising industry, Serge Pellé switched to comic art following a meeting with Laurent Galmot at Vents d’Ouest in 1993, going on to produce a series of commissioned albums with writer Thomas Mosdi (Golden Tiger, 1996, under the pseudonym Torgnoll) and his first solo album, Le Grand Chambardement (The Great Upheaval, Le Téméraire Editions, 1998). A stint in theater, video games and animation preceded the decisive turning point in his career: the creation, with writer Sylvain Runberg, of Orbital (Dupuis, 2006–2017), a Franco-Belgian space opera spanning seven volumes and a special edition, unanimously hailed as a benchmark in science-fiction comic art.
