The Genius of Space-Opera
Serge Pellé began his career in the Parisian advertising industry, where he illustrated products for the famous BHV catalogue. It was his meeting with Laurent Galmot in 1993 that decisively steered him towards comic art. He produced several albums with writer Thomas Mosdi, including Golden Tiger (1996), published under the pseudonym “Torgnoll” and co-created with Étienne Leroux. In 1998, he published his first album as a sole creator, Le Grand Chambardement (The Great Upheaval, Le Téméraire, 1998). He branched out into other creative fields: theatre set design, video games and animation — notably working as a pre-designer on the series Malo Korrigan and creating storyboards for Kaputt & Zosky. In 2005, his meeting with writer Sylvain Runberg marked a decisive turning point in his career: together, they created Orbital (Dupuis), a seven-volume science-fiction series published between 2006 and 2017, supplemented by the special edition Premières Rencontres (2013) and a complete collection. A true Franco-Belgian space opera, Orbital immediately established itself as a benchmark of the genre through the scale of its compositions, its masterful depiction of cosmic atmospheres and the richness of its visual world.
It could be said that Serge Pellé is a child of the Métal Hurlant generation, the generation that discovered science fiction – until then considered a "lowbrow genre"– and was dazzled by the artistic visions of Moebius, Jean-Claude Mézières and Enki Bilal.
