Vincent Mallié : dessinateur prodige et figure incontournable de la BD d’héroic fantasy contemporaine
Born in 1973 in Paris, Vincent Mallié began his career as an illustrator working with scriptwriter Joël Parnotte and published his first story in the magazine Golem in late 1996, before embarking on his first series, Hong Kong Triad (Le Téméraire, reprinted by Soleil, 1998–2000), comprising three volumes. At the same time, he worked in the film industry as a storyboard artist. However, he soon reunited with Joël Parnotte for a new series, Les Aquanautes (Soleil, 2000–2006), comprising five volumes, before publishing L’Arche with Jérôme Félix (Soleil, 2003–2005) in three volumes. In 2007, he began the fantasy series Le Grand Mort (Vents d’Ouest, 2007–2019) with Régis Loisel and Djian, comprising eight volumes. From 2010 onwards, he collaborated with Régis Loisel and Serge le Tendre on the famous series La Quête de l’oiseau du temps and published three volumes, starting with La Voie du Rige in 2010, followed by Le Chevalier Bragon in 2013, before concluding the series with L’Omégon in 2024 (Dargaud). Finally, he illustrated Ténébreuse (Dupuis, 2021–2022), a splendid medieval diptych written by Hubert (Peau d’homme). Vincent Mallié is also an illustrator. For L’École des loisirs, he has illustrated Arsène Lupin, Gentleman Burglar (2021), The First Adventure of Sherlock Holmes: A Study in Red (2022) and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (2023). For Margot, as both author and illustrator, he also published The Crazy and Incredible Adventure of Knight Léon (2024), followed by Jack, the Pirates and the Great Adventure (2025) and Edmond the Big Sheep (2026). In November 2024, the artist was the focus of an auction dedicated to his work, organised by Maison Daniel Maghen Enchères in Paris. The artist was the subject of several exhibitions at the Galerie Daniel Maghen in 2015, 2019 and 2025. In 2025, the BOUM Comic Book Festival in Blois dedicated a multi-storey exhibition to him, showcasing the diversity of his work as an author and children’s illustrator.
What can one say about Vincent, the artist and talented illustrator he has become? Above all, he is a first-rate storyteller. He has a complete grasp of the comic strip. He has a keen sense of framing and rhythm; his layout is impeccable, clear and effective. For me, these are the essential qualities one must possess when practising this art. Let’s now talk about his drawing style, which is constantly evolving. Recently, he has been trying his hand at children’s illustration, and the results are accomplished and very promising. His line work can be delicate or powerful, depending on the moment. In any case, his inking remains energetic and always effective. In short: he’s a cracking artist!
