Viktor Kalvachev

His bold, angular style, inspired by American comics, is complemented by high-contrast coloring that lends his pages an almost cinematic tension, in the vein of film noir. As a result of his training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia, he moves with ease between graphic novels, concept art and character design - a versatility that has earned him a stellar reputation in the entertainment industry.

Pencils, graphite and colored pencils are long-lasting. Pieces in wax crayon, black lead or charcoal require special care to avoid rubbing. However, never expose them to direct light. Like all materials, the paper used for these works is susceptible to change when exposed to UV light.
We advise you to display them away from windows, and to use frames made from pH-neutral conservation materials and “Museum” glass with anti-UV and anti-reflective treatment. If you prefer to keep your works unframed, we recommend storing them flat, in drawing cartons, with sheets of pH-neutral permanent paper in between. Keep them away from light and humidity.

Born in Bulgaria in 1972, Viktor Kalvachev moved to the United States in his early twenties, where he launched a diverse career in the entertainment industry spanning art direction, graphic design and graphic novels. As a freelance artist, he contributed to major film productions, such as Spider-Man and The Incredibles. His international career has included high-profile collaboration with Disney, Pixar, and with Steven Spielberg.

Viktor Kalvachev has received numerous prizes, including the Betsy Award. In addition, his original cover art for the comics Blue Estate earned two Eisner Awards nominations. Blue Estate is by no means the only graphic novel he has worked on; he has also contributed to PHERONE and is the artist behind the covers of comics such as Batman Beyond and Men of War. 

Kalvachev holds a master’s degree from the National Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria. He currently resides in Paris.
