Yves Swolfs

A master storyteller, a prominent artist known for his realistic style and spectacular staging, and a recognised specialist in Western and fantasy genres, Yves Swolfs holds a significant place in Franco-Belgian comics. To explore his artwork, Durango is the best place to start, followed by Le Prince de la Nuit for its darker, historical dimension.

Featuring some of the most beautiful artwork in contemporary Franco-Belgian comics, Yves Swolfs’ works are benchmarks in composition. His ease in shifting from a dark, gothic style to the arid plains of the American West makes him a major figure in realistic comics. A lover of vibrant colors, the covers of his albums are particularly sought after, such as that of Lonesome, La piste du prêcheur, which sold for €13,000 at auction (Daniel Maghen Auctions, 2022). 

To ensure that your pages are kept in good condition, we recommend that you never expose them to direct light, as UV rays can damage the media used to produce them. Although Indian ink is a perennial material, the paper support may change when exposed to UV light. Note that watercolor plates require special attention, as this medium is particularly sensitive to light. Pieces containing pastel or charcoal require special care to avoid rubbing.
We advise you to display them away from windows, and to use frames made of pH-neutral conservation materials and “Museum” glass with anti-UV and anti-reflective treatment. If you prefer to keep your works unframed, we recommend storing them flat, in drawing cartons, with sheets of pH-neutral permanent paper in between. Keep them away from light and humidity

Born in Brussels in 1955, Yves Swolfs studied journalism before training in comic art at the Institut Saint-Luc, in Claude Renard’s Atelier R. From the outset, he developed a personal style influenced by Jijé, Jean Giraud, Hermann and Greg. After various illustration and graphic design projects, he achieved success in 1980 with Durango, a Western inspired by spaghetti Westerns. A versatile author, he also created Dampierre before devoting himself more fully to writing series such as Black Hills 1890, Vlad and James Healer. He then expanded his creative universe with two major sagas: Le Prince de la Nuit published by Glénat and Légendes, published by Soleil. Since 2018, he has continued his exploration of the fantasy Western genre with Lonesome, whose fourth volume was published in 2024.
