Jacques Martin developed a clear, precise style, grounded in thorough research, featuring characters marked by a certain realism, inherited from ancient statuory.
A leading figure in Franco-Belgian comics, Jacques Martin’s artworks regularly appear at auctions. The record price is €20,100 for an original cover of the Belgian Tintin magazine, issue No. 41, and €16,080 for a page from Alix.
To ensure that your pages are kept in good condition, we recommend that you never expose them to direct light, as UV rays can damage the media used to produce them. Although Indian ink is a perennial material, the paper support may change when exposed to UV light. Note that watercolor plates require special attention, as this medium is particularly sensitive to light. Pieces containing pastel or charcoal require special care to avoid rubbing.
We advise you to display them away from windows, and to use frames made of pH-neutral conservation materials and “Museum” glass with anti-UV and anti-reflective treatment. If you prefer to keep your works unframed, we recommend storing them flat, in drawing cartons, with sheets of pH-neutral permanent paper in between. Keep them away from light and humidity
Jacques Martin discovered comic art at a very early age through the Buster Brown albums. After the war and until 1948, he alternated between series such as Lamar, l'homme invisible (Lamar, the Invisible Man), Œil de Perdrix (Partridge Eye), and Le Secret du Calumet (The Secret of the Calumet). He also created Le Hibou gris (The Grey Owl) and La Cité fantastique… While continuing his contributions to Bravo and Story, Jacques Martin proposed the character of Alix—Alix the Fearless—to the Journal de Tintin, which began appearing in the magazine for readers aged 7 to 77 on September 16, 1948. In 1953, Hergé invited him to join his studios. Jacques Martin’s collaboration lasted nineteen years, during which he worked on several Tintin stories without abandoning Alix and Lefranc. Over the following decades, he created new series: Jhen, Arno, Orion, Kéos, and Loïs.Complete biography.
