Claude Auclair and Bernet : twi signature, two univers
A prolific Spanish author, Bernet made his mark in the 1980s with his artworks for the Torpedo series, around fifty of which have been brought together for the exhibition. Through effective compositions, punctuated by the interplay of flat colors and texture, Bernet accurately captures the darkest atmospheres of 1930s New York, plunged into the heart of organized crime. His nervous lines and strong inking exude all the darkness and cynicism of the comic strip.
The exhibition also showcases the artwork of Claude Auclair (1943–1990), a major author of the 1970s and 1980s and one of the leading figures of the monthly magazine À Suivre, which was launched in 1978. Admired by Jacques Tardi and Jean-Claude Mézières, this master of black and white delivered throughout his career a committed body of work bearing the ideals of the entire May 1968 generation. Around fifty pages from his most famous post-apocalyptic and historical science fiction stories will be on display: Simon du fleuve, Jason Muller, Le Sang du flamboyant and Bran Ruz. Fans will be able to admire his majestic mastery of contrasts, which enhance the faces of his protagonists as much as his lush natural settings, through pages with effective story telling alternating between text elements and silent panels of rare intensity.
