A Contemporary Master of the Line

Born in 1975, Josep Homs is a Catalan artist and colorist. After studying at the Joso School in Barcelona, he began his career as a newspaper cartoonist and also worked in advertising, design and graffiti. He then moved to the United States to collaborate with Marvel. He illustrated Red Sonja, written by Frank Cho and Doug Murray, and Blade, based on a script by Christopher Hinz. He returned to Europe two years later and did the artwork for Secrets – L’Angélus (published by Dupuis), based on a story by Frank Giroud, with the first volume released in 2010 and the second in 2011. Impressed by his technical mastery and his ability to create atmospheric scenes, Éditions Dupuis commissioned him to adapt Millennium, the globally successful trilogy by Swedish author Stieg Larsson, into a comic art series, with Sylvain Runberg writing the script. Homs illustrated the first two and the last two volumes of the series, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2013) and The Girl Who Played with Fire (2015). In 2017, Homs illustrated the first volume of Shi, written by Zidrou and published by Dargaud. The series, which won the Saint-Michel Award for Best Artwork upon its release, now comprises six volumes. In 2025, he published Le Diable et Coral (The Devil and Coral), also with Dargaud, for which he handled the artwork, coloring, and script.

What stands out about Homs is his inking, done entirely with a brush, where he displays the same mastery as if he were using a pen. And then, the dynamic visual storytelling that showcases his incredible virtuosity. It’s better than a handheld camera: his horizon line floats while the viewing angles twirl until they twist perspective. You have to see this up close—it’s breathtaking.
