After studying fine arts at the University of Granada, and following a successful publication in Spain (with Lunáticos in 1995), the young Munuera tried his luck in France. In Angoulême, he met Joann Sfar, who wrote Les Potamoks (Delcourt, 1996) for him. Together with Jean-David Morvan, he published Sir Pyle S. Culape (Soleil, 1999). He reunited with both writers on the same series, Merlin (Dargaud): first with Sfar, then, starting in 2002, with Morvan. The first volume won the Prix Jeunesse at the Sierre Festival. Following this, again with Morvan, Munuera created Navïs (Delcourt, 2004), a spin-off recounting the childhood of the heroine from the original Sillage series, illustrated by Philippe Buchet. Together, also in 2004, Jean-David Morvan and José Luis Munuera made a splash by taking over the adventures of Spirou and Fantasio—for three albums—and attempting to bring these now-legendary characters into the new millennium. Since then, Munuera has enjoyed a string of successes, including, among others, Sortilèges (Spells, written by Jean Dufaux) and Fraternity (written by Juan Díaz Canales) for Dargaud, and, for Dupuis, Les Campbell and Zorglub, two series he created and wrote entirely on his own. Munuera is also the artist behind the series P'tit Boule & Bill (Little Boule & Bill). Recently, he adapted works by James Matthew Barrie and H.G. Wells into comic albums.
