Shaping the Imagination
Based in the heart of the Yvelines, Christophe Charbonnel began his career as an illustrator and then a sculptor at Walt Disney Studios. Having studied sculpture at the École Duperré, he has been crafting his bronze sculptures in a powerful, reinvented classical style for the past twenty years.
Christophe Charbonnel is drawn to hieratic, solemn figures, which he brings to life in his full-length sculptures. His faces and monumental groups are always imbued with a dramatic tension that lends them an undeniable beauty. Emotion lies at the heart of his work.
Deeply committed to creating monumental works (The Watchman, Theseus & the Amazon, David and Goliath...), he also explores the theme of the group (The Builders, Group of Warriors, The Revolt...). In 2010, he was awarded a grant from the Taylor Foundation.
In recent years, museums have been honoring his work. Indeed, after exhibiting his works at the Archaeological Museum of Aléria in Corsica—which acquired three monumental sculptures—Christophe Charbonnel’s works were added to the permanent collections of the Despiau-Wlérick Museum (which dedicated two exhibitions to him in 2018 and 2021), the Underwater Museum of Marseille, and the City of Chartres’ collections with his David and Goliath. Since the summer of 2023, Lug and Gaïa have been permanently installed in the English Garden of the Château de Fontainebleau.
Featured at prestigious art fairs and exhibitions (TEFAF Maastricht, Masterpiece London, PAD Paris, La Biennale Paris...), his visibility has grown with the installation of monumental sculpture installations in cities (Paris, Chartres, Dinard...). In 2024, the cities of Saint-Raphaël and Les Sables-d’Olonne dedicated public spaces to his work, while in 2025 his works were on display in the streets of L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue and Cagnes-sur-Mer.
If nothing happens, if I don't feel anything, I'd rather quit and move on.
