Hermann

Winner of the Angoulême Prize in 2016, Hermann is undoubtedly one of the finest artists of his generation and of the past 50 years. His unique and daring style, characterized by heightened realism, marks a turning point in the history of the 9th Art. By moving away from heroic stereotypes, Hermann has helped develop a form of contemporary comics with a pragmatic, more mature approach.

A legend of the 9th art, Hermann enjoys a very high reputation. Every year, Maison Daniel Maghen Enchères offers a special selection dedicated to the artist. The art pages are estimated at between €5,000 and €8,000, but the rarest pieces can fetch record prices, as was the case with an original art page from Volume 9 of Khaled (published by Glénat), which sold for €16,080. Cover art, which is much rarer, is estimated at around €30,000. The original cover for Volume 17 of Trois motos... ou quatre (published by Éd. Depuis) sold for €53,600—a record. 

To preserve your works on paper, we recommend that you never expose them to direct light, as UV rays can damage the mediums used. Paintings made with pastel or charcoal require special care to avoid rubbing.
We advise you to display them away from windows, and to use frames made from pH-neutral conservation materials and “Museum” glass with anti-UV and anti-reflective treatment. If you prefer to keep your works unframed, we recommend storing them flat, in drawing cartons, with sheets of pH-neutral permanent paper in between. Keep them away from light and humidity.

Hermann Huppen (1938–2026), born in Bévercé, Belgium, was a leading figure in Belgian comic art. A key figure at Tintin magazine and Éditions du Lombard for 60 years, he notably published Bernard Prince (1966) and Comanche (1969)—series that have become legendary, written by Greg. In 1979, he created his first solo series, Jeremiah, before launching Les Tours de Bois-Maury (1984). Hermann then explored historical and social narratives with Sarajevo-Tango (1995), Caatinga (1997), and On a tué Wild Bill (Wild Bill is Dead, 1999), as well as collaborations such as Lune de Guerre (War Moon, 2000) and Liens de Sang (Blood Ties) with his son. Jeremiah was adapted into a television series in 2002. Hermann has published no fewer than 120 albums throughout his 60-year career. He achieved recognition in 2016 when he was awarded the Grand Prix de la Ville d’Angoulême by his peers. Through his productivity, longevity, success, and ability to reinvent himself, Hermann has established himself as a pillar of the 9th Art and a master of direct color.
