Paul Dainton

As the head of the Warhammer 40,000 art team at Games Workshop for over twenty years, Paul Dainton is distinguished by a style that blends abstraction and realism, in the tradition of John Blanche. In his battle scenes, saturated with color and texture, the outlines dissolve into the smoke and dust of combat, while a central figure remains rendered with almost photographic precision. This alternation between blur and detail lends his war scenes an immediately recognizable dramatic intensity.

To preserve your works on paper, we recommend that you never expose them to direct light, as UV rays can damage the mediums used. Paintings made with pastel or charcoal require special care to avoid rubbing. Works containing watercolor are particularly sensitive to light, unlike gouache and acrylic.
We advise you to display them away from windows, and to use frames made from pH-neutral conservation materials and “Museum” glass with anti-UV and anti-reflective treatment. If you prefer to keep your works unframed, we recommend storing them flat, in drawing cartons, with sheets of pH-neutral permanent paper in between. Keep them away from light and humidity.

Paul Dainton has been drawing comic characters since he was a child. After studying art at university, where he explored various styles and broadened his approach to illustration, he worked for several years as a freelancer before joining Games Workshop, the British miniatures game manufacturer. There, he gained over twenty years’ experience, contributing in particular to the Warhammer 40,000 and Age of Sigmar universes, before taking the helm of the Warhammer 40,000 art team for five years. Internationally recognized for his work in concept art and character design, he more recently joined CMON as a senior artist, where he brings his creative vision to the publisher’s board games. His style, blending documentary precision with a sense of grandeur, has left its mark on generations of players and collectors through the numerous covers, artbooks and game illustrations he has created throughout his career.
