Roger: A Master of Black and White
Born in 1977, Roger Ibáñez Ugena studied comic art at the École Joso. In 1993, he created several short comic strips for the fanzine GÑ before winning the first manga contest held by Norma Publishing in 1994, and publishing in their magazine, Otaku. He then did artworks for the periodical Sukube and produced Hiromi (script: A. García). From 1999 to 2001, he created 14 comic strips (script: Raule) in the magazine Penthouse Comix published by El Jueves. Under the pseudonym Nono, he published artworks for various American erotic magazines, including Sizzle (NBM). In 2002 and 2003, with Raule writing the scripts, he published Hole'n'Virgin, Amores muertos and Cabos sueltos with Amaníaco. Presented at the Barcelona Comic Fair, this latest comic strip caught the eye of writer J.D. Morvan, who submitted it to Dargaud. In 2004 at the Angoulême Festival, the Jazz Maynard trilogy project was born, with Raule writing the scripts; the first volume was released in 2007. The series consists of seven volumes, the last of which was published in 2019. In 2024, Roger illustrated the graphic novel Le Dieu-Fauve, written by Fabien Velhman (published by Dargaud).
Roger’s mastery of inking is more than evident. When I look closely at his originals, I always get the impression that his ink has a different density than that of any other artist. Every line, every mark, seems to have weight and even depth. This isn’t the result of the ink alone; the use of white gouache to create highlights and atmosphere plays a major role in Roger’s work.
