Hyun Jin Kim, the maestro of Korean drawing
Born in 1971 in Busan, South Korea, Hyun Jin Kim studied Western painting at the Busan School of Fine Arts. In 2001, he had a fateful encounter with the legendary artist Kim Jung Gi, with whom he cofounded the Superani collective. Setting aside his own artistic practice, he devoted himself entirely to supporting and promoting his friend’s work. In 2007, he founded the Superani publishing house, through which he has spent years collecting, archiving, and publishing Kim Jung Gi’s countless illustrations in the form of sketchbooks, which have become essential references for art enthusiasts. Recognized as an art teacher, illustrator and painter, Hyun Jin Kim also founded the AniChanga School in Seoul. This institution passes on sketching methods to young artists – a teaching style that has become the benchmark within the Superani collective, which now comprises around sixty creators. Since Kim Jung Gi’s passing in 2022, he has continued to perpetuate his legacy, notably through ongoing publication of his sketchbooks and his presence at international exhibitions and conventions dedicated to his artwork.
