When Manga Meets la ligne claire (Clear Line)

Born in Fukagawa, in Tokyo’s Kōtō Ward, Hiroyuki Ooshima began his career as an artist at the age of seventeen, after being noticed by the weekly magazine Shūkan Shōnen Jump, which awarded him a prize. He juggled his studies with a career as an illustrator until the age of twenty-five, before launching his manga career in 2000 with Daisuke Ihara. Beginning in the summer of 2005, following increasingly frequent contact with French artists, he turned his attention to Franco-Belgian comics while retaining his manga-inspired artistic style. He contributed to the anthology Spirou, le guide de l'aventure à Tokyo (Spirou: The Adventure Guide to Tokyo, Dupuis), which aimed to introduce the character of the bellboy to Japanese audiences. In 2008, he moved to Reims, France, where he attended the Atelier 510 TTC workshop to deepen his knowledge of European comic art. As an artist, writer, and colorist, he has since worked for several French publishers (Delcourt, Bamboo, Albin Michel) and, in 2023, received the France Info Prize for Current Affairs Comics for Magnum Generation(s), co-written with Jean-David Morvan.
