David Sala: When color tells the story

After studying at the Émile Cohl School in Lyon, he created various book covers for novels. Then, starting in 2000, he published Replay, his first three-volume comic book series (Casterman), in collaboration with Jorge Zentner. This partnership continued with the four-volume series Nicolas Eymerich, Inquisitor (Delcourt) from 2004 to 2007. He also works in children’s publishing, producing more than a dozen picture books, including his major hit La Colère de Banshee (The Wrath of the Banshee), as well as La Belle et la Bête (Beauty and the Beast) and Féroce (Fierce, published by Casterman Jeunesse). In 2013, he returned to comic art and published Cauchemar dans la rue (Nightmare in the Street) for the Rivages/Casterman/Noir collection. In 2017, he brilliantly tackled Stefan Zweig's work, producing a highly acclaimed adaptation of The Chess Player. In 2022, he won the Landerneau Prize and the Elle Comic Book Grand Prize for Le Poids des héros (The Weight of Heroes). In 2026, he created a graphic reinterpretation—again published by Casterman—of Mary Shelley’s cult classic novel Frankenstein.
