Batem: Franquin’s heir, the new creator of Marsupilami, and a master of Franco-Belgian comics

Belgian comic artist and scriptwriter Luc Collin, known as Batem, born on April 6, 1960, in Kamina (Belgian Congo), is best known as the creator of the Marsupilami, the legendary character created by André Franquin in 1952 in Le Journal de Spirou . After graduating from the École supérieure des Arts de Saint-Luc in Liège, Batem submitted his work to Dupuis, who rejected it. He joined SEPP (Société d'édition, de presse et de publicité), a studio specializing in the audiovisual adaptation and merchandising of comic books. There, Collin worked notably on Le Marsupilami, and his artwork did not go unnoticed by Franquin. When Jean-François Moyersoen convinced Franquin to entrust the Marsupilami to a new publishing entity, Marsu Productions, the creator called upon Luc Collin. In 1987, Batem met Greg, Franquin and Moyersoen, and just four months later, the album La Queue du Marsupilami (The Marsupilami's Tail) was released. Quite quickly, and under the watchful eye of his mentor, Batem developed the Marsupilami universe. After Franquin’s death in 1997, he fully succeeded him on the series. He authored 35 Marsupilami albums, collaborating with renowned writers such as Yann, Dugomier and Colman, and writing the scripts for some albums himself (Trafic à Jollywood, Le Défilé du Jaguar – the Jaguar Parade).

Batem has always been madly in love with nature and all things exotic, including both flora and fauna. The Marsupilami’s original habitat remained functional—if not rather bland—for a long time. As soon as he could, Batem put his passion to work on his sets. He elevated them to a higher level, filling them with plants and animals, bringing to life in Palombia a tropical forest teeming with life, finally worthy of its inhabitants. Batem, a monk-copyist? No. An illuminator.
