Tif et Tondu

Tif et Tondu is one of the flagship series of Le Journal de Spirou, featured from the very first issue of the magazine in 1938. Created by Fernand Dineur, it was published for nearly sixty years, becoming a cornerstone of Dupuis editions and Belgian comics. Behind its apparent simplicity—Tif, the bald detective, and Tondu, his bearded partner, two detective friends solving mysteries—lies the richness of darker storytelling, more deeply rooted in realism and suspense. An identity that stood in complete contrast to the traditional style of Dupuis publications. The series truly took off in 1949 with the arrival of Will as artist, one of the great figures of the Marcinelle school, and Maurice Rosy as writer, who created one of the finest villains in Franco-Belgian comics: Monsieur Choc, an international criminal dressed in a tuxedo and a medieval knight’s helmet, leading the organization known as the White Hand. A true chameleon, the series evolved with its time: under Rosy, it moved toward the absurd; from 1968 onwards, Tillieux introduced a stranger and more fantastical atmosphere. Starting in 1978, Stephen Desberg steered the narratives toward political themes, before returning to a more traditional crime genre. With its explosive combination of mystery, adventure, humor, and imagination, Tif et Tondu has become an anthology series spanning 45 albums and nearly 60 years of adventures. A true masterpiece in the history of comic art.
