Rahan

First appearing on February 24, 1969, in the very first issue of Pif Gadget, Rahan, fils des âges farouches (Rahan, Son of the Savage Ages) was created by Roger Lécureux’s writing and André Chéret’s artwork. Orphaned after the destruction of his clan by the eruption of Mount Blue, this blond young man carrying an ivory knife and wearing a necklace of five claws travels through an imagined prehistoric world populated by dinosaurs and rival tribes, spreading his knowledge and his father's humanism wherever he goes. Rahan was conceived as an educational comic, promoting socialist values of collectivism, progress, respect for women and nature—ideas that were highly contemporary at the time. Chéret’s artwork owes much to American comics, particularly in its depiction of powerful, broad-shouldered figures. One of the most widely distributed comics of the 1970s, Rahan remains a major classic today!
