An adaptation of Léo Malet’s novel, Nestor Burma was adapted into comic art in 1982 by Jacques Tardi. “The man who knocks mystery out cold” investigates post-war working-class Paris, exploring each arrondissement one by one, always wearing his worn trench coat, carrying his pipe, and displaying his trademark cynicism. Tardi visually reinvented 1950s Paris with a bold line and meticulous documentary detail, bringing the streets, shop signs, and nighttime atmosphere of the era back to life. This encounter between Malet’s dark and direct style and Tardi’s melancholic visual universe produced four seminal cult albums, before other artists such as Moynot, Barral, and Ravard took up the mantle and continued the series.
