It has been nearly 70 years since Gaston first made his clumsy debut in Le Journal de Spirou. Born from the pen of the brilliant André Franquin, this lanky, naturally exhausted anti-hero quickly won over readers. A gentle dreamer and a disastrous inventor, Gaston triggers and endless string of explosions, fires, and other mishaps that follow him, giving rise to some of the most iconic gags in Franco-Belgian comics.
A unique blend of slapstick humor and poetry, Franquin also infused the series with a strong satirical dimension. Through his carefree questioning of authority, his pacifist ideas, and his ecological concerns, Gaston became a character deeply in tune with the social movements and aspirations of the post-May 1968 era.
