From April 25 to May 13, 2023, the Daniel Maghen Gallery is proud to dedicate an exhibition to two great names in comic art: Riff Reb's, with original pages from L'Île au trésor (2022, published by Maghen), and Antonio Hernández Palacios, with a selection of artworks from his iconic series.

Two comic books masters

Riff Reb's has established himself as one of the best authors of maritime stories of his generation. After the magnificent trilogy À bord de l'Étoile matutine (2009), Le Loup des mers (2012) and Hommes à la mer (2014), he delivers a powerful graphic interpretation of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, with his dark and vigorous style. Masterful boarding scenes follow the discovery of deserted islands populated by pirates of the worst kind. His flamboyant drawings are displayed in superb artworks created with Indian ink, charcoal, and white gouache, where the sea, gunpowder, and blood mingle in a veritable ode to tales of piracy. The exhibition presents more than a hundred artworks from the album, large-format illustrations created especially for the occasion, and a selection of original pages from his previous publications (Marines, La Trilogie maritime, Le Vagabond des étoiles).

The second part of this event is devoted to the artwork of a great comic artist, Antonio Hernández Palacios (1921-2000), with more than 120 original pages from his flagship series. His spectacular style and explosive use of color made Palacios one of the most brilliant artists of the Spanish school. Recognized for the success of his western Manos Kelly and the album Le Cid, he teamed up with Jean-Pierre Gourmelen to bring the legendary Mac Coy series to life, thus entering into legend himself. His precise, hatched lines, his mastery of relief and perspective, and his explosive color palette offer a spectacle like no other. The exhibition pays tribute to a master of both black and white and direct color through a wide selection of artworks.
