The Daniel Maghen Gallery is honored to present an exhibition dedicated to two talented artists, Olivier TaDuc for his Chinaman series and Saverio Tenuta for La Légende des nuées écarlates (The Legend of the Scarlet Clouds) and Le Masque de Fudo (The Mask of Fudo), from March 1 to 26, 2022.
The end of an extraordinary saga
To mark the release of Le Réveil du Tigre (The Awakening of the Tiger), the sequel and conclusion to Chinaman with Serge Le Tendre as scriptwriter, the exhibition looks back at Olivier TaDuc's iconic series, an exceptional ten-volume western inspired by the history of Chinese migrants in the Far West in the mid-19th century. The eponymous saga recounts the thrilling adventures of Chinaman, a former mercenary who rejected the yoke of the triads to set off in search of the new world. Swapping his colt for a powerful sword and bow, the hero possesses exceptional martial arts skills, leading to epic action scenes. For this series, TaDuc reaches the peak of his artistry, bringing to his pages the virtuosity expected of the best artists in the genre. Around a hundred originals will be on display in the exhibition, including original black-and-white pages from all the albums in the series, as well as covers and color illustrations.
A dreamlike world of rare beauty
The exhibition also features two major series by Saverio Tenuta, the tetralogy La Légende des nuées écarlates (The Legend of the Scarlet Clouds) and its prequel Le Masque de Fudo (The Mask of Fudo), for which he wrote the script, drew the illustrations, and did the coloring. The saga belongs to the medieval fantasy genre and draws inspiration from traditional Japanese folklore tales and legends to immerse us in a dreamlike world of rare beauty. The dark and poetic story is truly enhanced by Tenuta's artwork, which makes each page a veritable painting. His exceptional acrylic coloring plays on strong contrasts, particularly between crystalline white and scarlet red. Around a hundred originals will be on display in the exhibition, including pages from all the albums in the saga, as well as covers and illustrations.
