From February 14 to March 9, 2024, the Daniel Maghen Gallery is honored to present the very first Parisian retrospective dedicated to Belgian comic artist, author, and painter Gabrielle Vincent (1928-2000), famous creator of Ernest and Celestine
Over 150 original works on display
Organized in collaboration with the Monique Martin Foundation (alias Gabrielle Vincent) and Éditions Casterman, the exhibition offers a total immersion in her artwork. Watercolor, graphite, pastel, pencil, gouache, ink—more than 150 original pages will be on display, retracing nearly three decades of her career.
“It is with pleasure and emotion that the Monique Martin Foundation displays this selection by the artist Monique Martin, known by her illustrator name Gabrielle Vincent, at the Galerie Daniel Maghen today. We see this as a precious opportunity to share artworks that are dear to us, some of which are well known to the general public and others which are yet to be discovered.” Benoît Attout, beneficiary and founder of the Monique Martin Foundation.
This exceptional collection will mainly feature original pages from Ernest and Celestine, her masterpiece. Gabrielle Vincent illustrates this story with infinite tenderness using small impressionistic touches and economical lines. With great delicacy and lightness, she manages to convey emotions, movement, and light, while subtly exploring themes such as friendship, tolerance, solidarity, abandonment, precariousness, illness and love. Her vibrant artworks have earned her the admiration of her peers.
“It is a tremendous honor for me to present Gabrielle Vincent's artwork, and I would like to thank the Belgian Monique Martin Foundation for its trust. Ernest & Celestine is a classic, and Gabrielle Vincent is one of the greatest artists of her time.” Daniel Maghen
The exhibition will also highlight other major artworks by this illustrator. The exceptional drawings in Un jour, un chien reveal the artist's genius for sketching movement in just a few strokes, while those from her book Au désert fascinate with their unique atmospheres.
