For its first exhibition of the season, the Daniel Maghen Gallery is delighted to welcome two masters of colour and light: Emmanuel Lepage, for a retrospective of his work, and Christian Rossi, for "Golden West" and "Comanche Trail".
Emmanuel Lepage: the art of the travel diary
Emmanuel Lepage has made travel his favourite subject. Twelve years after his first expedition to the French Southern and Antarctic Lands, recounted in "Voyage aux îles de la Désolation" (Futuropolis, 2011), the author is back on board the "Marion Dusfrenne", heading for the Kerguelen Islands. In this new graphic novel, Emmanuel Lepage recounts his daily life in this extreme climate alongside the scientific teams stationed there.
A travelling artist, a brilliant sketchbook artist and the first comic book author to be awarded the title of Official Painter to the Navy in 2021, Emmanuel Lepage displays the full extent of his talent in sublime watercolour illustrations where wild landscapes, flora and fauna are revealed with subtlety, in a magnificent interplay of colour and light.
Seven years after his last exhibition, Emmanuel Lepage will be the subject of a retrospective at the Daniel Maghen Gallery. The exhibition will feature original art from "Danser avec le vent", ten illustrations of the Navy, taken from a book currently in preparation by Éditions Daniel Maghen, as well as previously unpublished illustrations from his flagship titles: "Muchacho" (Dupuis) and "La Terre sans Mal" (Dupuis).
Christian Rossi returns to the Western genre
With "Golden West" and "Comanche Trail", Christian Rossi returns to the Western genre, weaving together personal and historical narratives through the character of Woan, a young Apache banished from his clan. Forced to survive alone in the often hostile territories of the Golden West, he soon crosses paths with the famous warrior Geronimo. Under Geronimo’s guidance and through his own moral rigour, Woan achieves the redemption that allows him to return home. But on his way home, an unexpected encounter will divert him from his path.
A celebration of the great outdoors and nature, Rossi’s artwork is remarkably expressive and realistic. His use of colour in warm, ochre tones, his sense of composition and his mastery of movement offer a total immersion in the narrative and in the vast plains of the American West.
For this exhibition – the first in almost ten years – the Daniel Maghen Gallery will be exhibiting original colour plates from "Golden West" and "Comanche Trail", as well as fifteen original watercolour and oil illustrations created specifically for the exhibition.
