From May 16 to June 3, 2023, the Daniel Maghen Gallery presents an exhibition on the world of Blake and Mortimer through the artworks of Antoine Aubin and Ted Benoit, two artists who have taken over the iconic series created by Edgar P. Jacobs in 1946.

Antoine Aubin, in the spirit and working style of the master

With Huit heures à Berlin (Eight Hours in Berlin), published in 2022, Antoine Aubin has created his third Blake and Mortimer album, a remarkable artwork in the purest Jacobs style that took him seven years to complete. Nearly 40 inked pages will be on display, accompanied by their pencil sketches, which have a superb graphic quality. The reason Antoine Aubin's pages are so accomplished is that the artist carries out extremely detailed preparatory work, just as Jacobs did. Some of the pencil sketches are so detailed that they are almost identical to the final version of the page, with variations in graphite and colored pencils including backgrounds, characters, speech bubbles, text, and more. It is the work of a master craftsman.

Antoine Aubin is undoubtedly, along with Ted Benoit, the artist whose rigorous composition, meticulous execution, and intelligent attention to detail come closest to those of Edgar P. Jacobs.

Ted Benoit, one of the first artists to take over

Remaining faithful to Jacobs' style and spirit, Ted Benoit illustrated two Blake and Mortimer albums written by Jean Van Hamme: The Francis Blake Affair (1996) and The Strange Rendezvous (2001), playing a major role in reviving the saga's popularity with the general public. Few originals remain from these albums. The exhibition features a dozen pages and a large selection of pencil sketches, showcasing the remarkable effectiveness of Ted Benoit's clear line style, inherited from Hergé and Jacobs...

An exhibition also dedicated to Ray Banana & Hôpital

To complement this event, a collection of around thirty artworks from Ray Banana—an iconic series created by Ted Benoit in the 1970s—comprising original pages, illustrations and sketches, will also be on display along with pages from Hôpital, his very first success, in a dark, expressionist style quite different from his usual work.

Ted Benoit is one of those who, formally, has most faithfully reproduced Edgar P. Jacobs' style. The stakes are all the higher in this album as it is the first real revival of Blake and Mortimer since the artist's death. [...] Proof of its success, the album sold 600,000 copies and paved the way for the series to continue to this day.
