The Art of the Superhero
Born in Chicago, Ray Lago is an American illustrator, painter, and author known for his comic book covers, trading cards, and fantasy and science fiction illustrations. After receiving a classical art education, he began his career as a freelance illustrator for major publishing houses and advertising agencies, working notably for Reader’s Digest, Scholastic, Doubleday, and several American television networks. In the 1980s, he created illustrations for newspapers, books, and audiovisual media before turning to the comic art industry—a field that better aligned with his passion for imagination, adventure, and heroic characters. This shift marked a decisive turning point in his career.
Quickly recognized for the quality of his paintings, he collaborated with the biggest American publishers, including Marvel Comics, DC Comics, and Dark Horse Comics. He created covers and illustrations featuring iconic characters such as Spider-Man, the X-Men, Superman, Vampirella, Predator, RoboCop, and Star Wars.
Alongside his work in comics, Ray Lago became one of the most sought-after artists in the world of trading cards and illustrated games. His work has been published notably by Wizards of the Coast for Magic: The Gathering, as well as by Topps, Upper Deck, and several other specialty publishers.
