Letters by letters

Born in 1960 in Bradford, England, Pierre Duba grew up in Alsace. After working in a factory for a few years, he enrolled at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg in 1981, before turning his hand to illustration and comic art. For over twenty years, he has been developing a visual universe recognised as one of the most original in contemporary comic art, and has been honoured with several prizes and awards. His free-flowing drawing style, unbound by stylistic dogmas and always in motion, creates a personal and distinctive world for each book. His exploration of the visual medium has led him to filmmaking, extending his books into a different relationship with time and the world of sound: from books to films, whether literary adaptations (Quelqu’un va venir by Jon Fosse, Rien que l’Arctique by Hanne Ørstavik), fiction (Antoinette, L’Absente), travelogues (Kyoto-Béziers, À Kyoto) or autobiographical reflections (Sans l’ombre d’un doute). As a visual artist, he is now presenting a series of twelve large-scale drawings entitled Lettre à Lettre, in which he constructs powerful and poetic images from an entanglement of letters, exploring the fundamental questions that run through his entire body of work: Humanity and its identity, roots and innermost nature.
