On Edge

Miguelanxo Prado was born in Spain in 1958. As early as 1979, he began publishing his first comic strips in various fanzines while studying architecture. Prado’s artwork gained widespread attention in 1988 following the publication of his album in France, titled Chienne de vie, published by Les Humanoïdes Associés. This was followed by numerous translations of his works by the same publisher, such as Demain les Dauphins (1988), C'est du sport (1989), Stratos and Manuel Montano (1990), Y'a plus de justice (1991), and others. Already an established figure in the Spanish comic art world, the artist confirmed the breadth of his talent with Trait de craie, a work of art worthy of the greatest masters of drawing and painting. Published in 1993 by Casterman, this album received numerous awards: the Comic Book Booksellers’ Award in 1993, the Alph’Art Award for Best Foreign Album at the Angoulême International Comics Festival in 1994, and the Special Jury Prize at the Sierre International Comics Festival in 1994. In 1993, The Mosquito Publishing house, with whom he later published Fantasmagorie in 2000, dedicated its first monograph to him. Prado then ventured into children’s comics by adapting Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf (published by Casterman, 1995). In 2001, the BD BOUM Festival in Blois awarded him the Grand Boum Caisse d’Épargne Prize for his entire body of work. Twelve years later, his album Ardalén (published by Casterman, 2013) marked the artist's return to the comic art scene and was awarded the National Comics Prize by the Spanish Ministry of Culture. His latest album, Proies faciles (published by Rue de Sèvres, 2017), offers a very dark social fable based on the economic crisis that has affected Spain in recent years.
