Jean-Martial Dubois

Jean-Martial Dubois published his first comic strips at the age of 15 in a local newspaper, depicting life in his neighborhood. At 17, he left secondary school to attend the Geneva School of Decorative Arts, where he spent five years studying illustration, comic art, scriptwriting and painting; a monthly comic magazine from French-speaking Switzerland, in the spirit of Fluide Glacial, then regularly devoted several pages to his work. At the age of 23, he moved to Lyon to start working as a freelancer and quickly made a name for himself; his pictorial style, reminiscent of Walt Disney, led him to paint sets and backdrops for a puppet theater. Over the years, he juggled a variety of roles – as a painter, set designer, caricaturist and teacher – while sharpening his artistic vision, inspired by Norman Rockwell, Edward Hopper and Fauvism, through several solo exhibitions dedicated to Lyon at night. In 2000, he moved to Paris, where he contributed humorous drawings to the press and published a well-received collection, Dessins d’humeur, before winning the Cognac Prize at the Jonzac Biennial of Humorous Drawing in 2008. Since 2010, he has been teaching comic art at the Louvre Museum and exhibiting at the Daniel Maghen Gallery, a leading Parisian venue for original artwork. In 2011, one of his illustrations was featured by the Moulin Rouge on 50,000 postcards distributed worldwide.
