Frank Pé

Frank Pé studied fine arts at Saint-Luc before beginning to contribute to the magazine Spirou in 1973, where he created the character Broussaille, a contemplative teenager who loves nature. La Nuit du chat (The Night of the Cat) earned him the Alph’Art Audience Award at Angoulême in 1990. At the same time, drawing on his flagship series, he created the animal-themed series L’Élan (The Moose), whose comic strips appeared in the pages of Spirou from 1981 to 1986. Together with Philippe Bonifay, he launched the Zoo trilogy at Dupuis, a chronicle of a wildlife park in the early 20th century. This series was awarded the CBEBD Prize for Best Artwork (1994) and the Max and Moritz Prize (1996). At the same time, he worked as a graphic designer on The Quest for Camelot (1997, Warner Bros) and on various projects for Cartoon Films. He then collaborated with Zidrou on La Lumière de Bornéo (The Light of Borneo), which received the Atomium Award in 2017—and later on La Bête (The Beast, 2020), offering a powerful reinterpretation of the Marsupilami, which was awarded the Albert-Uderzo Prize for Best Artwork in 2021. Unanimously recognized in the world of the Ninth Art, Frank Pé distinguished himself through his magnificent animal-themed epics. He passed away in 2025, leaving behind a rare and demanding body of work, unanimously hailed as one of the most unique in Franco-Belgian comics.
